This series of Geocaches is about airlines that no longer fly today. Although Eastern I never flew on, it was on of the big four airlines in the 1950's thru 1960's. The cache hides are not special, but the history of airlines of years past should be, so be sure to read on.!
Eastern Airlines was one of the big airlines back in the 1960's-70's. It was started in 1926 as Pitcairn Aviation flying mail between Atlanta and New York. It became known as Eastern Airlines in 1934. It dominated the north-south East Coast travel for many years. Eastern pioneered the hourly shuttle service between NY LaGuardia and Washingon DC and Boston in 1961. From 1971-1989, it was the official Airlines for Walt Disney World in Florida. Airline deregulation of 1978 started the process of Eastern's eventual demise due to it high cost structure. It was bought by Texas Air in 1986 by Frank Lorenzo. Eastern's position continues to erode. In 1989, Lorenzo locked out mechanics during a labor dispute. Soon after Eastern filed for Bankruptcy. Lorenzo also started selling some of Eastern's most profitable routes. This was a death spiral for Eastern. Then suddenly on January 19, 1991, Eastern abruptly stopped operations and 5000 employees lost their jobs that night. Eastern's shutdown ended many aviation jobs in Miami and New York.
