Usuzumi-zakura is an old cherry tree in Neo Valley, and is located about
28 km north-northwest of Gifu city.
The tree stands in the park on a hill located about 1 km west of Tarumi
terminal station of Tarumi Railway.
"Usuzumi" means "pale sumi". Sumi is the Japanese black ink for
calligraphy, and pale sumi is the color like very light gray.
"Zakura" is transformed from "sakura", so it means cherry blossom.
This cherry blossoms are light pink in the buds, becomes white in full
bloom, and chenges to usuzumi color just before the petals fall.
The height is about 16.3 meters, the branch spread is 20-26 meters, and
the trunk is about 9.9 meters around.
The cherry tree is more than 1,500 years old. It is said that Emperor
Keitai planted the baby tree in 467.
Around 1913, this tree began to wane. And in 1948, Education Ministry
decided that it would die down within three years on investigation.
The following year, a dentist in Gifu city, who had also been good at
treatment of trees, gave this dying tree a treatment. He cut 238 dying
roots of the tree and put new grafts on it.
And the following year, this tree was restored beautifully.
But this tree was damaged by the very strong typhoon in 1959 (Isewan
Typhoon in Japanese / Super Typhoon Vera in English).
In 1967, Chiyo Uno (1897-1996, a lady novelist) saw the miserable state
of the tree, and she contributed a magazine to appeal for the need to
protect this tree.
And Gifu Prefecture launched the protection in 1968.
It is designated special national natural treasure.
Now many tree doctors and the people in this area protect this old tree
heartily.

Usuzumi-桜はネオ·バレーにある古い桜の木であり、岐阜市の約28キロ北北西に
位置しています。
ツリーは約1キロ西に樽見鉄道の垂水端局の位置丘の上の公園に立っています。
「Usuzumi」は「淡い墨」を意味する。墨は書道のための日本の黒インクで、淡
い墨は非常に薄い灰色のような色です。
「桜」は「さくら」から変換されたので、桜の花を意味します。
この桜が芽に淡いピンクである、満開、白になり、花びらが落ちる直前に
淡墨色に変化します。
高さは枝の広がり20〜26メートルで、約16.3メートルあり、幹周り約9.9メート
ルです。
桜の木は、1,500以上の歳。それは、継体天皇が467年に幼木を植えた
と言われています。
1913年頃、この木は衰え始めた。そして1948年に、教育省は、調査上の3年以内
にダウンして死んでしまうだろうと判断しました。
翌年、また、樹木の治療を得意としていた岐阜市の歯科医は、この木を治
療しました。彼は木の根を切り取って、その上に新たな移植片を置きました。
翌年には、このツリーは美しく復元されました。
しかし、この木は1959年に非常に強い台風（英語/日本語スーパー台風ヴェラ伊
勢湾台風）により損傷を受けました。
1967年には、宇野千代（1897から1996年、女性の小説家）は、ツリーの悲惨な状
況を見て、彼女はこの木を保護する必要性を訴えるために、雑誌を提供してくれ
ました。
岐阜県は1968年に保護を開始しました。
それは、国の特別天然記念物に指定されています。
今では多くの木の医師や、この地域の人々が心からこの古い木を保護します。
