Fafnir was great Dragon of Norse legend. He was born from the Dwarf Hriedmar as a human but later became a Dragon. He later shed his wings and became a Wurm. Fafnir had poisonous breath which he used to plague his land. Hriedmar acquired a large sum of gold and a magical ring as blood money for his sons death. However both the gold and ring were cursed; it made the bearer crave gold and have extreme misfortune. Fafnir became influenced by the ring and teamed up with his brother Regin to steal the hoard of gold from their farther. Fafnir in his powerful Dragon form swiftly killed Hriedmar and took the gold for himself. He flew away from Regin and everybody else to a far away place. He shed his wings enabling him to enter into the depths of a dense forest. With his poisonous breath he plagued the forest so that no one could come near him. Still wanting the gold, Regin asked the hero Sigurd for help. He instructed Sigurd to dig a trench near a lake were Fafnir frequently uses. When Fafnir will move over the trench to get to the water, Regin will thrust his sword into Fafnir's heart. During this task Regin runs away in fear leaving his sword Garm behind. Odin then appears to Sigurd as an old man and tells him to dig longer trenches otherwise Sigurd will drown in the blood of Fafnir. Sigurd does so and then waits in the trench. When Fafnir comes, Sigurd plunges the sword into Fafnir's shoulder, mortally wounding him. Dying of blood, Fafnir asks Sigurd who had told him to do this. When Sigurd explains it was Regin, Fafnir laughs and tells Sigurd that he too will be cursed and die tragically. When Sigurd slew the beast he roasted its heart in a fire and drank its blood giving him the ability to speak all languages. Later Regin came back to kill Sigurd. Sigurd ambushed and slew Regin instead but then he himself became obsessed with the ring and treasure and shortly after, Sigurd died tragically. In doing so he killed his father. Fafnir kept the gold to himself and lost his wings becoming a Wurm. Regin then sought the mortal hero Sigurd to kill Fafnir to end this madness. When Sigurd slew the beast he roasted its tongue in a fire and drank its blood giving him the ability to speak all languages. Eventually Regin became violated by the ring and sought to kill Sigurd. Sigurd ambushed and slew Regin instead but then he himself became obsessed with the ring and treasure and shortly after, he died a tragic death.
