The Moose Mountain Provincial Park is a high land oasis in south east Saskatchewan, rising some 500 feet above the surrounding plains. It was created by the melting of the glaciers many years ago. It is mainly a forested area dotted with numerous small lakes and sloughs. The 154 square mile park is home to many wild animals such as moose, elk and white tailed deer down to coyote, fox, beaver, mink and squirrel. Occasional sighting of bear, cougar and lynx are also reported as well as the unpopular wild boar. The park is also home to 80 to 100 species of birds, most for the summer months only. Due to the park being at a higher elevation, there is no outside water flow in. It relies entirely on the local rainfall which creates a large fluctuation in the water levels. The last few years have seen above normal rainfall so the current water levels are high. The ever popular Kenosee Lake at the resort area, is nearing capacity. There are many activities available at Kenosee. Some are golf, water slides, camping, horse back riding, swimming, mini golf, hiking and in winter, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.
