This area in front of you is all that remains of the Dorrance Colliery complex. The real story here is the brick building visible through the trees. This structure is called the fan house. The fan inside, installed in 1884 at a cost of $25,000, is called a Gubial fan. The fan was used to circulate air through the shafts below, and was powered by steam engines. The blades are 35 feet in diameter, able to rotate at 49 RPM, and exhausted 180,501 cubic feet of air per minute. The fan and engines ran 24 hours a day. Every Sunday a three man crew would give the engines and fan an oiling and complete going over- the lives of the miners below depended on this fan working at peak performance. BRING TWEEZERS!!!
