Geocache Description:

This Broadmayne "D5" series of caches, multicaches and puzzles have been placed at Sites of Interest that mark the role this village played in preparations for Operation OVERLORD in 1944. The village of Broadmayne made up part of D-Day marshalling area 'D5'. From here units such as the 1st Inf Div & 2nd Rangers gathered prior to embarkation from the ports of Weymouth & Portland.

These caches have been placed as the village prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of Operation OVERLORD with a re-enactment camp and vintage village fete (http://tinyurl.com/nrw8m8q).

A documentary has also been prepared to mark the event http://broadmayne1944.wix.com/broadmayne1944#!films/csfj

Stage 1 - The Black Dog

The Black Dog was one of two Broadmayne pubs in 1944 and was well used by service personnel based here. The second pub "The Compasses" was based further along Main Street and is now a private residence.

Stage 4 - Hard Standings

Looking along Rectory Road from this point concrete can be seen along the right hand side. Known as ‘hard standings’ these areas were where heavy vehicles and artillery pieces (canon/guns) would be parked. The ‘hard standings’ continue around the corner but have since been covered over. Similar areas can be found on both sides of Chalky Lane in the area of Woodlands and Beech Close

Stage 5 - Screw Picket

Here can be found a "screw picket" that was once part of a large barbed wire 'entanglement' that surrounded Camp B.
