Geocache Description:

Credit River - Shipwreck Series

SS Train Ferry No. 2
June 13, 1940

There are many shipwrecks around the world. Some very famous and others not so. Each however has it’s own story to tell. As you travel along the Credit River doing this series of caches, we have highlighted a number of these shipwrecks. During low water levels on these parts of the Credit River, you need to be careful in a canoe or kayak so as you don’t wind up in your own shipwreck. Besides the many large rocks along the way, there are also some other obstacles such as dams which should be avoided. All of the geocaches in this series have been placed, by riding inflatable boats and tubes or on foot by walking in the water along the Credit River. Whichever way you choose to search for these caches, use caution and common sense.

SS Train Ferry No. 2
York & London (North Eastern Railway Company, York) The London & North Eastern Railway Company was formed 1923 by the amalgamation of the Great Central Railway, Great Eastern Railway and the Great Northern Railway Companies. In 1948 the company became part of the British Transport Commission. The ships were taken over by Stena Sealink in 1979.

The company was a major British manufacturing company of the early years of the 20th century. Armstrong Whitworth engaged in the construction of armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles, and aircraft.

Train Ferry no 2 was requisitioned in September 1939 to carry military traffic to and from Calais, then in June 1940 to assist the evacuation of troops from St. Valery-en-Caux. On 13 June she was damaged by German shore batteries and beached and abandoned off Le Havre.
