Geocache Description:

This is a small series of Caches placed in Coed Cefn Wood Coord's may be out a little due to trees.
Lovely Woods with a short circular walk and gorgeous views of surrounding hills, also displays a beautiful carpet of bluebells in spring.
Dominated by a canopy of oak and beech and ground flora including bluebells and bramble, this ancient woodland site with an Iron Age hilltop fort alongside dry stone walls and hedge boundary incorporates a historical angle to your woodland enjoyment. Coed Cefn occupies a hilltop that is a prominent landmark overlooking Crickhowell which lies 1 mile to the west. It is popular place for local people to go walking all year round. It is locally know as 'Bluebell Wood' due to its impressive display of bluebells at the end of April/early May. There are good views all round of the local hills and sheep pastures and to the north the distinctive table mountain can easily be seen around a mile away. A low, semi-rectangular earthwork is found in the centre of the wood and is an Iron Age hill-fort which is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) by CADW. Access comprises of a mainly flat circular footpath running from the car park at the eastern end of the wood. Most of the woodland canopy consists of oak and beech with self-sown ash predominating on the southern side and a few remaining fir and spruce. In the western tail of the wood semi-mature oak and sycamore are found. The woodland floor is dominated by bluebells and brambles, although there is some hazel, hawthorn, birch, holly and elder in the under storey. There is an area of planting in the centre of the site which was planted with native broadleaves in 2003 following clearance of conifers. There are two significant old stone quarries within the wood which could be dangerous and visitors should keep to the established paths.
