Joshu Ushibori
Ukiyoe is a color paintnig using woodblock and is one of the famous Japanese cultures. It shows everyday life in the Edo period. The Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) made some famous Ukiyoe series. One of them is Fugaku Sanjurokkei which means thirty-six views of Mt. Fuji. Because this series was very popular since the publication, Hokusai made additional ten pictures. Therefore, there are 46 Ukiyoe pictures in this series.
Ibaraki prefecture was called Hitachi no Kuni in the Edo period. Also it was called Joshu for short. Ushibori was the easternmost town around the Kasumigaura lake. Hokusai drew the life of people in the picture. A boatman spread water in the lake from a ship. Two herons flew away in wonder.
This area is maintained as a park nowadays. There are many cherry and azalea trees. It is a wonderful place to see not only Mt. Fuji but also Mt. Tsukuba over the Kasumigaura lake. In addition, it is famous as a lakeside district with a lot of irises. This cache is placed around a viewing platform. It is a cylindrical plastic container.

常州牛堀
『富嶽三十六景』は葛飾北斎の代表的な浮世絵シリーズの一つです。富士山そのものだったり、いろんな場所で望める富士山をその土地の風景とともに描いたものがあります。発表当初から大人気となり三十六景の予定が十枚追加されて四十六景あります。
このあたりは江戸時代は常州(常陸国)牛堀と呼ばれていました。富嶽三十六景のひとつ『常州牛堀』の舞台となっています。当時は富士山が望める霞ヶ浦の東端の地として有名だったそうです。画面では、船頭が米のとぎ汁を流し、驚いた鷺が二羽飛び立つところのようです。
いまでは公園として整備され、桜やつつじが植えられています。春から初夏にかけては花の名所となり、霞ヶ浦越しの筑波山や富士山を望める好展望の場所になっています。また、潮来は水郷として名高く、アヤメが有名です。このキャッシュは展望台周辺に設置しました。近くにいた地元の人によると秋から冬にかけての夕景が素晴らしいそうです。
