Geocache Description:

On Sunday, August 17, 2014, we will conclude another awesome SAW Event by holding a CITO and BBQ.  The CITO will focus on wrapping cottonwood trees to protect them overuse by beavers.

Police Point Park is a unique, natural reserve of about 300-acres with the South Saskatchewan River flowing beside it. It is a beautiful oasis for people to come and enjoy nature, and a great spot to search for caches.  The Park is renown for its giant cottonwood trees and abundant wildlife.

Beavers are an essential animal to our ecosystem and great lumberjacks. However, their tree cutting can get carried away at times leading to large-scale damage to our local cottonwood forest.  Many of the cottonwood trees in the Park are 300 years old or older; hence, our desire to preserve them.  It is possible to protect the trees and still have beaver. Wrapping cottonwoods at the base with chicken wire prevents beaver from chewing them and moves our rodent friends to other foods, like willow, that can withstand beaver use.

Participants should meet at the Park’s Nature Centre; the CITO will start at 10:00 am and finish at noon. All equipment (gloves, wire cutters, pliers) necessary for the event will be provided. We will also have experts on hand to give instructions and assistance. Afterwards, there will be a wiener roast and closing ceremony to celebrate the end of SAW 5.

The Nature Centre, operated by the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program and managed by Grasslands Naturalists, offers interesting displays, programs, and information for the public about southern Alberta’s great natural and human history, and Geocaching information; the Centre is open year-round, Tuesday - Sunday, 9:00am - 5:00pm.

The Interpretive Program is excited to be teaming up with S.E.A.R.C.H. for another exceptional SAW Event.
