Geocache Description:

I grew up in Alaska and spent many summer evenings relaxing on the beach in front of Pyramid Island with family and friends. As a child, the island was elusive: at high tide the island is quite far from the mainland, but on low tide one can almost walk to the island (I've hard some have with a bit of swimming). Using a canoe, I first paddled to the island in the early 1990s. If you want to access this geocache, you will need to do the same (sea kayaks available for rent in town). The island sits on the Chilkat side of the Haines, marking the end of the Chilkat River. This area has historical significance as the Chilkat group of the Tlingits could save time by carrying their canoes from the outlet of the river to Dtehshuh, which saved approximately 20 miles of rowing around the peninsula. To access this cache, you will need to embark on a ~1.5 kilometer adventure, carrying your canoe (or kayak) across the beach and down to the water. From there, paddle your way to Pyramid Island and be sure to secure your canoe where it will be safe from an incoming tide. Once on the island, the real challenge begins. The cache is not difficult to locate (in fact, a GPS isn't needed), but challenging to access, especially in summer. Push your way through the brush, thorns, and other plants up the steep terrain until you reach the summit of the pyramid. You will find the cache on the highest point under the watch of the eagles, often sitting in the two largest trees on the island. Watch our for bears, as they have been known to use the island as a resting point to cross the inlet. A piece of Tlingit jewelry is in the cache as a gift for the First to Find. (Do not approach the two largest trees on the island as it is known to house an eagle's nest).
