[ITA] Eretta su una precedente edificazione benedettina nel XII secolo, la chiesa dell'abbazia venne costruita tra il 1305 e il 1335 e presenta la tipica costruzione a pianta latina, con la facciata rivolta a ponente e l’abside rivolta a levante come prevedeva la simbologia cistercense. La facciata è uno fra i migliori esempi di gotico cistercense nel Veneto.
Nel 1388 l'abbazia passò alla Serenissima, che nel 1448 ne ottenne la riduzione a commenda. Tra gli abati commendatari è da ricordare Carlo Borromeo, che affidò l'amministrazione dei beni prima ai domenicani, quindi ai benedettini. Nel 1573 la commenda venne affidata ai camaldolesi. Nel 1771 la Repubblica di Venezia soppresse il monastero, trasferendone i beni: tutti gli edifici del complesso, ad eccezione della chiesa e della sacrestia, furono venduti a privati, fatto che provocò gravi deturpazioni architettoniche.
Dal 1915 vi risiedono i Servi di Maria; durante la grande guerra la chiesa subì gravi danni, ai quali si sopperì con i restauri cominciati nel 1919.Lo splendido chiostro, caratterizzato da un elegante effetto di movimento creato dalle colonne che lo costituiscono, fu portato a termine nel 1268, quando i monaci cistercensi si insediarono nel monastero.
[ENG] Built in the twelfth century on a previous Benedictine building, the church was erected between 1305 and 1335 and shows the typical construction with a Latin Cross plan, the facade facing west and the apse facing east as provided for the Cistercian symbology. The facade is one of the best examples of Cistercian Gothic in the Veneto region.
In 1388 the abbey passed under the Venetian Republic rule, and in 1448 was reducted to a Commandery. Among the commendatory abbots is to remember Charles Borromeo, who entrusted the administration prior to Dominicans, then to Benedictines. In 1573, the commendation was given to Camaldolese. In 1771 the Venetian Republic suppressed the monastery, transferring the goods: except for the church and sacristy, all the buildings of the complex were sold to private owners, a fact that caused a severe disfigurement of the architecture.
Since 1915 the Abbey is home to the Servants of Mary; during WWI the church was badly damaged, and a restoration was taken off in 1919. The magnificent cloister, unique for an elegant motion effect created by the columns that constitute it, was completed in 1268, when the Cistercian monks settled in the monastery.
