Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the WSP Geo-Trail located in Wilderness State Park that will take geocachers to scenic, natural, and historic places located within the park. . Geocachers are reminded to bring water, a snack, bug spray and a pen or pencil to sign cache logs. Wilderness State Park offers a variety of year-round recreational activities within its over 10,500 acres. With 26 miles of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline and approximately 28.5 miles of hiking trails, the park provides great places to observe nature, participate in water sports, and camp. The park has 250 modern campsites, six rustic cabins and three rustic bunkhouses, as well as two rustic campsites. A Recreation Passport is required on your vehicle to enter the park. $11/YEAR for Michigan registered vehicles, $31/YEAR for Non-Michigan registered vehicles, and a DAY pass for Non-Michigan registered vehicles is $9.

During World War II the western portion of the park was leased by the U.S. Navy for remote control aircraft testing. Tow planes pulled experimental gliders from the Traverse City Naval Air Station to the islands where the gliders where released and flown via radar and cameras. De-classified video footage shows the dud-bomb equipped gliders crashing into Waugoshance lighthouse and large white targets on the islands. This glider was believed to have been a machine gun target. Today, craters metal chunks and this glider are all that remain of the military activity in the park.
