Cedarville, Ohio

5 Cedarville Facts:

  • Cedarville almost took another town's name.

Cedarville, founded in 1816, was originally going to be named Milford. But the founders found out that another town in Ohio was already named Milford, so they changed the name to Cedarville after the cedar trees that grew on the banks of Massie Creek at the time.

  • The Father of Labor Day was born in Cedarville.

Cedarville is the birthplace of Senator James H. Kyle, who was the main sponsor of the bill that created Labor Day. In honor of Senator Kyle, Cedarville holds its annual CedarFest on Labor Day weekend, which includes a festival and fireworks.

  • You can bike all the way to Cincinnati or Cleveland from Cedarville.

The Pennsylvania Railroad once ran through Cedarville but eventually fell out of use. In the 90s, the old rail route was paved over, and eventually it became a multi-use public trail named the Prairie Grass Trail. The Prairie Grass Trail is now part of the Ohio to Erie multi-use Trail that runs from Cincinnati to Cleveland.

  • Cedarville is a college town.

In 1887, the Reformed Presbyterians founded Cedarville College. In 1953, ownership was transferred to the trustees of the Bible Baptist Institute of Cleveland, Ohio, and Cedarville College became an Independent Baptist institution. Today, Cedarville University is still around and growing each year.

  • Cedarville has its own performance hall.

The Cedarville Opera House is downtown Cedarville’s most prominent landmark. Originally constructed in 1886, it served as the center of the community for over 60 years before being closed in 1956. In 1984, the Opera House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1994, the Opera House reopened, and still hosts performances and events to this day.
