Geocache Description:

This cache has been Find #1 for a new geocacher: 20 times as of Dec 26, 2016

If this is your very first geocache to find, please mention it in your online log.

I spent 1995-2000 earning my PhD in Chemistry at this building, and have taught chemistry labs to thousands of students here since then.  This is a beautiful heritage site building and is one of the three original permanent Point Grey campus buildings (along with the Main Library and the Powerhouse).  Construction was begun in 1914, halted for the war, and completed October 16, 1925.

UBC Chemistry's first of many claims-to-fame arrived in 1965 when Neil Bartlett synthesized the first Noble Gas compound, XePtF6, thereby forcing a revision of textbooks as noble gases -- such as xenon --where heretofore believed to be chemically unreactive. A few photos of the "shrine" to his achievement are included.

Placement of this cache adds chemistry to the string of caches placed at science buildings running North-South on Main Mall at UBC. This cache is placed with permission of UBC Facilities Buildings Management.

Are you ready to enter these hallowed halls of chemistry?  Maybe you should stop before crossing the thresh-hold and see if any light can be shed on your decision.  A photo of the lovely entrance to this building could provide guidance, as GPS seems to be extremely bouncy by the granite monolith. Cache is not inside the building!

Congrats on FTF goes to Cuddlefish and Jr. Fish.
