I stumbled upon this trig while exploring running tracks in the area. This stretch of bush is connected to the Ecclesfield and Waitako Reserves in Pinehaven by non-maintained but well used bush tracks. The trails are not clearly marked and there are piecemeal markings indicating bait trails
This cache is recommended only for individuals who are confident at following ground trail as the track is indistinct in some places.
The cache can be accessed from multiple entrypoints:
* Freyberg Road via Tank Hill and bush trails, passing by these caches along the way:
- Tanks for the View - http://coord.info/GC4618G
- We Need You - http://coord.info/GC4DJZQ
* Chichester Road via bush trails, with a cache right at the trail head:
- Witako - http://coord.info/GC2NZAT
* Blue Mountain Road via bush trails.
I have provided instructions for the shortest and most straight forward route to the cache from Blue Mountain Road. Contact the CO if you would like GPX of the above routes.
Most Straightforward Way To the Cache:
From the Blue Mountain Road trail head, it is a slippery climb up a wide clay track, which swings north west to pass a house with a goat tethered outside. Continue to where the wide clay track veers left. Here there is a narrow foot track straight ahead (look for pink and red markers on a distant tree along the track).
Follow the narrow foot track for 380 m until you reach the junction for Bait Trail 'J' (pink ribbon marked with a hand written 'J'). Or you could continue to the trig and double back 25 paces to the said junction. Cache is approximately 5 m down the west section of Bait trail 'J', 0.5 m off the left of trail.
Cache is a 1 Litre screw top jar in black camouflage.
This adventure is a round trip of less than 2 km and should take no more than 1 hour. A reasonable degree of fitness is required, as well as good, solid footwear. The only bothers are that there is limited parking near the trail head, and a lack of views at the trig.
Enjoy!
