I september 1825 skriver Crowe begeistret til A. F. Nellen i London at "the whole of this Alpine district is impregnated with Copper".

ENG: On the cache location you can see traces of the first big industry in northern Scandinavia; copper. The Copper works in Kaafjord was operational during the period of 1826-1909. The first reports of ore deposits happened in the late 1600s. In 1824, Englishman John Rice Crowe visited Trondheim, where he saw an ore lump that came from Alta. Crowe took the stone to England, to have it checked there. It proved to be ore with a high copper content. In spring 1825, Crowe returned to Finnmark, and in September he wrote to AF Nellen in London that "the whole of this Alpine district is impregnated with Copper". The findings resulted in the establishment of Alten Copper Mines in 1826. The administration was English.
Kaafjord was a convenient location. Ore fields were located by the fjord, and they was ice-free all year round. Harbour conditions were good, andarge ships could port less than 100 meters from the storage place.
Around the mines a whole community, with shops, schools, health care, church and entertainment, emerged. The management of the copper works built log homes to the workers and officers. To prevent epidemics, the house mostly would only room one family.
Although workers' housing conditions were good, the contrast to the director's residence, "The House", was great. Here the director, John Rice Crowe, lived with his family.

The ruins around the cache and culture trail # 1-4 shows residues from the large industry. At the cache site you can see a relatively large ruin. You may bring children to this site, but keep an eye on them all the time, as there are many places for them to fall in.
