On 14 January 2001 GPSFrodo hid South Africa's first geocache in Gauteng at S25° 46.780 E27° 54.712.
The cache was listed on geocaching.com as GC163 and named GCZA01.
It took three days for the cache to be found, and the finder was none other than Jors (on 17 January 2001).
Jors is still caching today, which makes him SA's longest active geocacher.
Unfortunately this was the only find on the cache as it was muggled shortly thereafter, and this location is now in the middle of a built-up area, so it is impossible to place a commemorative cache at the same spot.
23 September 2014 is exactly 5000 days since the placing of that cache - and the occasion is really worth celebrating.
Geocaching in South Africa has come a long way since 14 January 2001. At the time of writing 15837 geocaches have been placed in South Africa, of which 10967 are still active.
As a comparison, the entire continent of Africa has seen 18796 placements, of which 13211 remain active. So SA has 83% of the toal active geocaches in Africa.
Please join in the fun and celebrate 5000 days of geocaching in SA at this event!

As far as KZN is concerned - the first cache was placed by Artful Dodger on 22 August 2001. This cache was Durban's Botanical View (GC186B). The cache was FTF'd by Jakrsa on 24 September 2001, nearly five weeks after placing! Imagine that happening today!
KZN's 5000 day anniversary will be on 1 May 2015.
