Geocache Description:

Easyish roadside cache, BYOP

A cache close to this area was hidden in December 2011 by Tienkie, they chanhged their user name to Tomlet. The cache was disabled in November 2012 due to the area being fenced and the owner did not like the idea of geocachers on his property.
Tomlet granted me the information of the original cahe, Thank you.

During the Anglo Boer War the British Army erected a fort to defend the railway.

After the war Mr. Danie van Ryneveldt was the first Peacekeeping officer in Theunissen and stayed in a house very near to the “old fort.” The original Fort (rubble of stone you can see on the other side of the fence) was demolished in 1981, when the new Winburg road was built, but the house kept the name of The Old Fort.
Danie van Ryneveldt was the father of Sir Pierre van Reyneveldt, the first person to fly from England to Cape Town across Africa. This he accomplished in a double winged aeroplane with a double enjin with an average speed of 90 kilometers/hour. Colonel van Rynefeldt and Lt. Brand departed on 4 February 1920 from London in The Silver Queen. In Bulawayo their aeroplane crashed and the South African Government sent them another bird. They were the heroes of the time. Pierre was honoured with a knighthood from the British and locally he was promoted to a General. In 1923 Pierre landed in Theunissen to great delight of schoolchildren, who had never seen a plane before.
Today the Old Fort is a restaurant and pub.
Beware of muggles. During harvest time this is a busy place. The farm people wait here for a ride back to the farms on the trucks.
