Papa was a rollin stone. - Such an iconic song to start with. "Papa" was written by Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield for the Temptations in 1972, and with Dennis Edwards on lead vocals, recieved no less than 3 Grammy awards. The song caused numerous problems within Mowtown for both the writers and The Temptations. Legend has it that Dennis Edwards had accused Norman Whitfield of being insensitive as the opening line to the song was "It was the third of September, That day I'll always remember, yes I will, 'Cause that was the day that my daddy died", The date that Dennis Edwards father was reportively killed. The other half of this legend was that his father was actually killed on the 3rd October. Also, one of the founder members, Otis Williams had pushed Norman Whitfield to only right ballads for the group, and recorded "Papa" to keep the peace, but eventually led to The Temptations sacking Norman Whitfield as thier songwriter and Producer.
