Red-Tailed Hawk
These beautiful birds are North America's most common hawks. They often perch on telephone poles and take advantage of the open spaces along the roadside to spot and seize mice, ground squirrels, rabbits, reptiles, or other prey. Breeding season initiates a spectacular sequence of aerial acrobatics. Hawk pairs fly in large circles and gain great height before the male plunges into a deep dive and subsequent steep climb back to circling height. Later, the birds grab hold of one another with their talons and fall spiraling towards earth.Red-tailed hawks are monogamous and may mate for life.
This cache is placed in memory of a friend; Kyran Kennedy, a BlackHawk pilot who died in Iraq. I believe his spirit lives with this, his favorite bird, and watches over his family, as he continues to soar in the heavens.
This series continues in the spirit that the bird series placed by "honeychile" initiated. Her joy in the outdoors and a love of caching helps bring people here who might not otherwise have a reason to season their day with such simple pleasures. This series is a welcome for new visitors and welcome back to those who have been here before. Look for the caches, but don't forget to look for the birds and the other wildlife along the trail.
