The first phrase of the saying “peppar, peppar” exists also in the phrases “peppar och salt“ (pepper and salt) oder “peppar, salt och ingefära“ (pepper, salt and ginger). All variants are applied in order to avoid a blow of fate, after having been very lucky. By this means herbs are scattered on the ground to avoid that evil spirits will chase away the fortune.
The second phrase of the saying “ta i trä” comes from the English phrase “touch wood” and is applied in order to avoid a blow of fate. Usually a wooden surface is touched after repetition of this phrase to ward off some misfortune. The English analogous “knock on wood”. Good luck!
