The cache is a small clear Lock&Lock container located near the trailhead of a 2-mile natural surface trail located at the Girl Scouts', Hornets Nest Council trail. This trail weaves through mature forested ravines, open fields, and high bluffs that look over the South Yadkin River.
This area protects mature hardwood and riparian forests along the South Yadkin River. This area is home to numerous rare species, unique habitats, and a variety of animals and wildflowers. The abundance of uncommon species and unique, quality habitat lead the State Natural Heritage Program to recognize this area as one of the most significant Natural Heritage Areas in the region. The Natural Heritage Area covers approximately 800-acres along the banks of the South Yadkin River.
The Girl Scouts, Hornets' Nest Council Trail is located on private property and is provided to the public through the generosity of the Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council in cooperation with Catawba Lands Conservancy. Please respect their generosity by staying on the trail and keeping the area clean!
The property is permanently protected through a cooperative effort between then Catawba Lands Conservancy and the Girl Scouts, Hornets' Nest Council. The trail, managed by the Catawba Lands Conservancy, is a segment of the Carolina Thread Trail. Even though the cache is located at the trailhead, visitors are welcomed to explore this 350-acre conservation area. The container has a few "First Finder" fees for those of you who are quick enough!
