This cache is located on Skihi Peak south of Helena, Montana. Looking south from downtown Helena, Skihi is the highest mountain in the Grizzly/Orofino Gulch area skyline. I prefer to hike in along the Brooklyn Bridge Mine trail parking area at N 46 31.071 W 112 07.362 which is about 9 miles round trip, but you can also start from the other end of the trail along the trail which starts at Cox Lake.
On the way in stop at the Brooklyn Bridge mine and visit Jack Montgomery's grave site. From the mine take a right (do not go straight past the mine that trail will put you back on Orofino Gulch Rd). Continue right to where you see a small cairn. From the cairn bushwack up Skihi to the cache site. It is located on a prominent rocky area that gives you a very nice view of Helena and surrounding area. Good place to have a lunch, sit for a bit and relax before the walk back. If you are like me and want to go to the top of the mountain if you are this close, continue along the ridge to the peak. You can see Helena from the peak also, but I think the view is better at the cache site. It is a bit of a bushwack to get there, but that's the fun of it. Lots of elk, deer, wildflowers, berries, and the occassional black bear here.
Its a nice hike for some relative solitude. I rarely see people here hiking or biking. When Mount Helena or the ridge trail are crawling with people, you'll be relatively alone here. Good luck getting this one. Enjoy the walk/bike ride!
