Geocache Description:

One-room schools were commonplace throughout rural portions of Pipestone County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

District 56 was petitioned August 17, 1889 and approved on September 3, 1889. The South Minnesota Land Company gave land for District 56 on December 12, 1881. Amelia Carmen and husband sold two acres more on June 12, 1937. It was the last district formed in Burke Township.

The district was dissolved in 1954 but remained open. Students were transported to Pipestone and to Edgerton.

The schoolhouse was a small building with a new garage and a coal shed in later years. It was sold in 1955 to a resident of Pipestone for about $300.

For more information about all the country schools located in Pipestone County please feel free to visit the Pipestone County Museum.

This is a small container just holding a log, so bring your own writing tool and may also need a TOTT.
