Faded Markers Series: Swayze Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The_Eh_theist: I checked on this one today, and could not find it. I was going to replace it but with the house being so close and no real good spot to place a cache, I feel like this one shouldn't be replaced as it infringes upon the nearby homeowner's property. Also, with evidence of children here, I'm just going to err on the side of caution and archive this one.

Geocache Description:

This is another cache in the Faded Markers Series. This series will mainly focus on older, near forgotten burial plots of pioneers in the Niagara Region and beyond. The goal of this series is not necessarily the length of the walk nor the difficulty of the find, but rather a simple reverence for those who came before us to shape our area.

Welcome to the Swayze Family Cemetary, located on the western boundary of Short Hills Provincial Park.

This cemetary eluded me for many years but finally after many attempts to locate it, I found it.

Several of the monuments at the cemetary are broken and difficult to read, but the site is being cared for as evidenced by metal bracing that has been placed around broken marble slabs to keep them upright. Due
to the early dates of death recorded on many of the stones it is difficult to locate these individuals in census records, making their connections to each other unclear. There are several marble fragments, suggesting that there are more than seven people buried here.

Buried here are:
James Swazye (1825-1857)
Mary Johnson Swayze (1788-1863) wife of Freeman (?-1878)
George Swayze (1853-1855) son of Freeman and Jennifer.
Jabez Johnson (dates unknown)
Pheabe Dennis (1817-1842)
Unknown name (?)

Please note that you must use the waypointed trail to access this cache and follow it around the person's property, and as such, there is absolutely no night caching as this cemetary is directly behind a home. Use your best judgement when caching in this area.

Have fun and happy caching!
