Credit River - Shipwreck Series

There are many shipwrecks around the world. Some very famous and others not so. Each however has it’s own story to tell. As you travel along the Credit River doing this series of caches, we have highlighted a number of these shipwrecks. During low water levels on these parts of the Credit River, you need to be careful in a canoe or kayak so as you don’t wind up in your own shipwreck. Besides the many large rocks along the way, there are also some other obstacles such as dams which should be avoided. All of the geocaches in this series have been placed by tubing, inflatable boat or on foot by walking in the water along the Credit River. Whichever way you choose to search for these caches, use caution and common sense.

U-200
German submarine U-200 was a Type IXD2 U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II.

The submarine was laid down on 3 November 1941 at the AG Weser yard at Bremen as 'werk' 1046, launched on 10 August 1942 and commissioned on 22 December 1942 under the command of Korvettenkapitän Heinrich Schonder. After training with the 4th U-boat Flotilla at Stettin, the boat was transferred to the 12th U-boat Flotilla for front-line service from 1 June 1943.

She was sunk southwest of Iceland by depth charges from a British aircraft.

U-200's first and only operational war patrol began on 12 June 1943. The new submarine departed Kiel and sailed north of the British Isles, through the 'gap' between Iceland and the Faroe Islands and into the Atlantic Ocean. On 24 June 1943 the U-boat was located by the RAF and sunk with all hands by depth charges from a British Consolidated B-24 Liberator of 120 Squadron.

All 68 souls aboard U-200, including seven members of the German 'Brandenburg' special forces, were lost.

This is the 200th geocache placed as part of the Credit River Shipwreck series.
