Each year at the end of June for the past nine years, local cacher RLR X 2 along with lawnman115 and jcriggs organize an event that is a favorite among Rock County and surrounding area cachers. During the event, a commemorative cache is raffled and the winner gets the honor of placing it. This was my third year attending, and I was lucky enough to win!
Each year's event promises good food, great company, and lots of geocaching-related fun! Unfortunately, the gathering this year was somewhat bittersweet as one of our local cachers and event regular (he has attended every Happy Hollow Event to date, and always took the annual group photo!) DonB passed away during the event. Three of the cachers in attendence were Registered Nurses, and lifesaving measures were underway almost immediately upon his collapse. At the same time, 911 was contacted and units arrived within 10-15 minutes. He was transported to the hospital where his death was pronounced.
Obviously the tone became somber after the incident, but we managed to carry on with the event. Our heroes were comforted and thanked, stories and remembrances were shared, food was enjoyed, and we all rejoiced in each other's company and the beauty of the day as we managed to find joy and laughter amid the pain and sorrow. We were all comforted knowing DonB was among caring friends doing an activity he enjoyed when he left so suddenly.
This cache is placed in Rockport Park, a beautiful and large park with excellent recreational trails. It is a good-sized container with plenty of room for swag! Lots of trading for the kids! For the quickest hike to the cache, I have included a parking waypoint. From there, it's about 0.3 miles to the cache with a mostly gradual incline except for a couple short, steeper places. The cache itself is near the top of the valley of a creek running through the park, and if you come at it from a different location in the park, prepare yourself for a very steep hill! There are raspberries and thorns and thick vegetation mostly surrounding the cache location, but you may find easier access if you come at it from the west...
Happy caching!
Congrats to Ron1273 and geogrinches on the shared FTF!!!
