Situata su un colle, Oria domina la circostante pianura salentina. Fu proprio questa caratteristica che, secondo Erodoto, spinse un gruppo di cretesi naufragati sulle coste salentine a iniziare la costruzione di una città, alla quale diedero il nome di Hyria. Successivamente la città crebbe con un processo di aggregazione analogo a quello della costituzione della città di Roma sul colle Palatino. Divenne capitale politica della confederazione messapica, per poi entrare nella sfera d'influenza di Roma, divenendo infine municipio romano.
Nonostante i numerosi attacchi dei saraceni, che saccheggiarono e distrussero più volte la città, Oria fu di grandissima importanza nel Basso Medioevo per la presenza della sua comunità ebraica, capace di contribuire fortemente alla ricostruzione del pensiero mistico, della filosofia e della mentalità ebraica. Dopo un periodo di dominazione normanna, ai quali si deve il primo nucleo di quella fortificazione che sarebbe poi diventata l'attuale castello, fu residenza di Federico II, appartenente alla nobile famiglia sveva degli Hohenstaufen e discendente per parte di madre dalla nobile dinastia normanna degli Altavilla. È a Federico II che si devono le numerose modifiche che hanno portato il castello ad assumere la sua configurazione attuale.
È proprio nel nome della nobile famiglia di Federico II, gli Hohenstaufen, che dal 1972 la città di Oria è gemellata con la cittadina tedesca di Lorch, situata nella regione del Baden Wurtemberg. Le due comunità hanno mantenuto rapporti cordiali con vari scambi di tipo culturale, turistico ed economico. Per celebrare tale unione, il Parco Oria-Lorch venne istituito negli anni ottanta per volere del consigliere provinciale Emanuele Pipino. Situato sul colle fra le contrade Frascata e Sottoparabita, questo parco presenta varietà botaniche tipiche della macchia mediterranea... e un cache, che vi regalerà una vista panoramica.

Situated on a hill, Oria overlooks the surrounding plains. It was this characteristic that, according to Herodotus, pushed a group of Cretan shipwrecked on the coast of Salento to begin the construction of a city, to which they gave the name of Hyria. Subsequently, the city grew by an aggregation process similar to the one of Rome. It became the political capital of the messapian confederation, and then entered in the sphere of influence of Rome, eventually becoming a Roman municipality.
Despite the numerous attacks of the Saracens, who sacked and destroyed the city several times, Oria was of great importance during the Middle Ages, due to the presence of its Jewish community, which contributed greatly to the reconstruction of the Jewish mystical thought, philosophy and mentality. After being dominated by the Normans, to whom the city owes the fortified nucleus of what would later became the present castle, Oria was residence of Frederick II, who belonged to the noble family Hohenstaufen and descended on his mother line from the Norman noble family Altavilla. It is to Federico II that Oria owes the many changes that brought the castle to take its current configuration.
It is precisely in the name of the noble family of Frederick II, the Hohenstaufen, that since 1972 the city of Oria is twinned with the German town of Lorch, located in the region of Baden Wurtemberg. The two communities have maintained cordial relations with several cultural, touristic and economic exchanges. To celebrate this union, the Oria-Lorch Park was established in the eighties at the behest of the provincial councilor Emanuele Pipino. Situated on a hill between the districts Frascata and Sottoparabita, this park features botanical varieties typical of the Mediterranean Macchia... and a cache, that will give you a panoramic view.
