The Causeway was constructed in 1926 and 1927. It is a series of man-made earthen bridges connecting Mobile and Baldwin Counties. During that era, limited funding and bridge technology favored constructing the Causeway on fill spoil spanning the shallow bay rather than attempting to span the distance with raised bridge structures. This changed the landscape of the delta by holding back the natural flow of the rivers allowing the filling in the bays.
