On the way up Elk Summit Rd from the South Fork of the Salmon R., you can see the saddle point of Elk Summit.
If you enjoy exploring the many remote and scenic places in central Idaho and don't mind long rides on dirt & gravel roads, you may want to try this route. Many of the panoramas are really inspiring. The road crosses several summits and seems to be a never ending series of long ups, downs, and switchbacks as you go between these high points and the lower stretches that run alongside rivers. Along the way you will continuously have some incredible views of the surrounding forest-covered mountains and gorges.
This trip is not for your family sedan or minivan. They do a reasonable job of upkeep on most of this road but some parts of it are on the rough and rocky side. It may be slow going but just about any truck or SUV should handle it fine. You won't need your 4WD unless road conditions are wet. Be forewarned; it will be a long trip. Just to do the loop alone is an all day trip. If you enjoy exploring the many side roads which take you to various mountain lookouts or old mining claims, ... well, you could spend days doing that.
The cache is a segment of heavy duty 4-inch black PVC tubing. It will be a very short walk from where you can park at the summit.
This area is remote so please take necessary precautions and use common sense. Make sure your vehicle is up to the task and as in any remote location, have plenty of gas, food, water, and emergency supplies.
CAUTION: PLEASE REPLACE THE SCREW-ON CACHE LID VERY LOOSELY. IF TOO TIGHT THE NEXT PERSON WON'T BE ABLE TO GET IT OFF.
