Chiesetta alpina sulla collina di S. Mauro
Sul piccolo colle di San Martino, lungo la strada che porta alle frazioni di Valdarmella e Villaro, sorge la Cappella di San Mauro Abate.
Si ignora la data della sua costruzione, tuttavia si sa per certo della sua esistenza già nel 1500; essa era di proprietà delle famiglie Gai di Gaiafango e degli eredi di Giuseppe Costa. L’usanza di benedire la campagna dopo la processione alla chiesetta datava dal 1794. Tale antica abitudine, che accomunava a questa anche la cappella dell’Annunziata e quella di San Rocco, oggi e caduta in disuso. Nel 1955 la cappella fu abbellita per essere dedicata alla memoria degli Alpini caduti durante le varie guerre: sul retro venne costruito un campanile a cuspide con una campana; le pitture furono tutte restaurate, il pavimento rifatto e allargata la piazzuola davanti alla costruzione. Quest’opera di rifacimento poté essere condotta a termine soprattutto grazie all’interessamento di alcuni volenterosi ex-Alpini.
Ormea è una cittadina di circa 1750 abitanti, situata a 750 m. di quota s. l. m. al centro delle Alpi Liguri. E' situata nell'Alta Val Tanaro,nel sud del Piemonte e della provincia di Cuneo, sulla SS28 che declina fino al mare di Imperia e Albenga. Ormea si trova in una conca dominata dalle vette più alte delle Alpi Liguri: il Monte Antoroto, il Pizzo d'Ormea, il Monte Mongioie e culminanti nel massiccio del Marguareis. Il paese ha un curioso perimetro a forma di cuore ed il centro storico è caratterizzato da un intricato labirinto di vicoli, (“trevi” in dialetto ormeasco ) e da un originale sistema di lavaggio delle strade, il biale, utilizzato per la pulizia e lo sgombero della neve.
