St Bride's Stream
St Bride's Stream, (or Cabinteely Stream, or the north branch of the Loughlinstown River) rises in Foxrock, flowing above ground through Cabinteely Park and, joining with the Carrickmines River, past Cherrywood and under the N11 dual carriageway into the Loughlinstown Woods Natural Heritage Area, where it joins with the Loughlinstown River. It forms part of the Loughlinstown/Shanganagh river system, which eventually reaches the sea at the south end of Killiney Beach.
There is a strong connection between St Bridget and the local area, with names like Bride's Glen, Ballybride and St Bridget's Church in Cabinteely, although she is of course most strongly associated with Kildare.
The puzzle
Harumi was feeling pleased with himself. He had sat up all night solving the previous day’s sangaku puzzle, but he had managed to figure out the solution. “First to solve”, he thought immodestly to himself, as he ran down to Tennou Hachimangu shrine to hang up his solution on the wall for all to see. He hoped he might find a new wooden tablet hanging there, with a fresh puzzle in geometry to challenge his wits and to show off his prowess.
Arriving at the shrine, he was amazed to find not one but two new ema with interesting new arrangements of shapes painted in bright colours. And when he lifted them down for a closer look, he saw that there was something special about these two: one of them was labelled with the character 北 (meaning “north”) and the other with the character 西 (“west”). He felt sure that these puzzles overlay a deeper mystery; that their solution would reveal something hidden.
