Literally, a "ghost town," Ochiltree was a town named after prominent jurist, William Beck Ochiltree, in 1876. After pioneers began to settle in dugouts, they called their town Ochiltree for convenience sake, and when the county was organized, they decided their village would be the county seat. The town boomed to a population of 600 and boasted a courthouse and a school. However, in 1919, the Santa Fe Railway founded a new town approximately 8 miles to the north, and enticed the populace of Ochiltree to move to their new city by offering free lots. The improvements made to the village of Ochiltree were hauled north. The town of Perryton was named after county official George M. Perry.
