Description:
Delcastle Recreational Area is a New Castle County (NCC) park located along McKennons Church Rd. and Duncan Rd. This 400 acre park hosts an 18 hole golf course with club house, driving range, ball fields, tennis courts, a hockey court, and many walking trails. Many people make the use of this park without any knowledge of just how this land became available for our enjoyment. The history of this park is quite surprising. It dates back to 1901 when Delaware completed construction of its first penal workhouse. This was a red brick structure on 40 acres along Kirkwood Highway and Greenbank Rd. Most of this first structure is now gone but one lone brick guard tower still stands over the ball fields and tennis courts.

The purpose of the workhouse was to provide work for the inmates, both male and female, with the goal being to be self sustainable and, in turn, provide inmates with skills for jobs once they were released.

At first the principle industries were manufacturing of clothing which ended in 1939 but some small industries continued such as upholstery and furniture repair.

In 1918 the Board of Trustees of the New Castle County Workhouse purchased 600 acres of farmland along McKennon’s Church Rd. and Duncan Rd. This became known as the Delcastle Farm. A dormitory was constructed which held 30 men. It still stands today and is visible on your right as you drive in towards the parking for this cache. A newer dorm was build in 1932 which could hold up to 100 inmates. This still stands today and serves as the pro shop and restaurant. Inmates worked the farm on this land and sold produce at local markets. What was not sold was packaged at a cannery staffed by female inmates. By 1941 there were about 62 men employed in the agricultural and cannery work. The fields continued to be worked until the late 1960’s and the farm was closed in 1968. By 1970 the golf course you see today was in operation.
