Geocache Description:

A micro near to Stainland and Holywell Green United Reformed Church

The building is Jacobean design.

Built in 1853 by Joseph James.

In 1852, John Crossley built a day school at a cost of £1,600.

In 1857, a Sunday School began in the building.

In 1862, John Shaw & Sons bought the buildings from Crossley for the Stainland Congregationalists. It was enlarged and converted to a chapel in December 1866. The first service was conducted on 11th May 1867.

In April 1872, a new church was planned by the Shaw family for their model village. This opened in April 1874 at a cost of £10,000. It had a pulpit of Caen stone and polished granite pillars and accommodated 620 worshippers. A new organ was added in 1876. In 1880, the church was conveyed by Shaw's to trustees, and had a value of about £20,000.
