Geocache Description:

A lovely church, in a quiet village.

Stannington is a small village in Northumberland which is associated with Morpeth and its county council. Stannington's oldest building is the church, St. Mary The Virgin. The Church was First built in the 1100s and was then knocked down and then rebuilt. Stannington is divided into three: Stannington North-East Quarter, Stannington North-West Quarter and Stannington South Quarter.

The total area of Stannington, including Stannington Vale is 10,093 acres. The principle landowners is Lord Ridley.

The village has two vicarages. There were two hospitals St. Mary's Hospital; currently being developed into houses and businesses: And what is now 'the Whitehouse Centre', this was originally a children's tuberculosis hospital but later became a hospital for children with various chest problems such as asthma and bronchitis. It also cared for children with such illnesses as epilepsy and eczema and others with physical handicaps. It included a school and had no connection with St. Marys which was a mental asylum. During the Second World War part of this was used as a RAF School.

Stannington First School is located near the church. The village also has a village post office.

The A1 road arcs past the village and in instances of traffic accidents or otherwise-motivated road closures, traffic form the A1 has had to be streamed though the village itself. Improvements in the last ten years to the roads interconnecting Stannington to surrounding areas has meant a reduction in the relatively high accident count in the area previous to the new developments, and consequently the likelihood of said traffic-diversion measures. Modifications include a roundabout and a new over-pass.
