Information about the Hutchins Estate is sketchy and often conflicting, but according to local legend, around the turn of the century, Mr. Hutchins, a Boston investment banker, purchased a farm and about 100 acres on this Cape Rosier shore. Within a few years he finished building the "Cottage", a tennis court, a steamboat wharf, greenhouses and barns...the root cellar came later.
In 1929 the stock market crashed and Hutchins went bankrupt.
In good Maine tradition, the cottage, after being abandoned for several years, became fodder for local scavengers. The farm itself remained intact and continued operations into the 1950's. Anita Harris, donor of Holbrook Island Sanctuary, bought the whole shebang from the town for back taxes in the early 1970's, and subsequently tore down all the remaining buildings prior to donating the property to the State.
The above coordinates are for parking...and are close to the farm building foundations. The "Cottage" foundations and the cache are 1750 feet away at 306 degrees True from the parking coordinates.
There are several ways to solve this mystery cache. And each one seems to produce insignifcant variations on the final location. But one of the easiest methods (and the one I used) is to use your GPS receiver to calculate the final coordinates.
