Geocache Description:

Click to see a Cooper at work

A hoop pole is a straight slender length of green sapling wood often made of hickory or white oak used to make barrel hoops. A cooper made the wooden vessels, bound together with hoops. They often made casks, barrels, buckets, tubs and butter churns. The hooper was the assistant to the cooper and the man who fitted the metal hoops around the barrels or buckets the cooper made. The English name Hooper is derived from that profession. Over time, Coopers often took on the role of the Hooper themselves.

Until the early 1900s many items were stored or shipped in wooden barrels. New England had a gracious supply of wood for coopers. White oak, red oak, ash, chestnut, pine, and spruce were some of the woods used to store items ranging from dried goods to arsenic.

This property, located off of South Hoop Pole Road, is maintained by the Guiford Land Conservation Trust and placed with their permission. Please leash your dog and do not visit the area after dark. There are no trails. You will not need to cross private property by parking at the provided coordinates.
