Nokken are a dangerous and manipulative troll from Norse mythology. The word Nokk comes from old Norse meaning seahorse.

It is important to note however that the Nokken are more likely to be found inland in freshwater. They have been spotted near streams and rivers but they really prefer small, reedy, inland bodies of water. This is because this is where lilies tend to grow and make excellent bait for unsupecting children eager to pluck the flowers from the pond.

Nokken are indiscriminate feeders however, and will prey on adults as well. To women the Nokken may appear as a handsome young lad with a fiddle in hand. On this fiddle he plays a hypnotic, seductive melody that draws the young maiden near the waters edge. Alternatively the Nokken may disguise itself as a beautiful white horse with large black eyes. This horse appears almost out of a fog and is said to shine gently like the moon.

This crafty beast also knows that historically men are generally drawn to the water by two things, women and fishing. The Nokken will transform itself into a stump on which to sit or a small wooden boat in which to ride while fishing. If this doesn't work this shapeshifter might take on the form of a radiant scantily dressed maiden whose siren voice is carried on the wind promising her affections.

The true appearance of this creature however is grotesque. It is covered in seaweed, its skin has the color and texture of a drowned man who has been underwater for weeks. Its large mouth is filled with jagged rotting teeth above which rest two piercing yellow eyes that are said to glow even on a moonless night. When in its true form the Nokken also wreaks of decaying swamp matter.

Legend has it that should you find yourself capture or in an encounter with a Nokken saying the Nokkens name will cause it to shrink back into the body of water they so love to occupy... This is of course provided you can figure out the Nokkens name before it devours you!
