Popping Stone Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Deceangi: Rather than keep this cache temporarily disabled (which should only be used for shortish periods) I'm archiving it. If/when the cache is ever replaced I'll gladly unarchive it assuming it still meets the guidelines.

Geocache Description:

A nice walk with various starting points to a historic point.

There are various starting points for this cache. The easiest being from Gilsland Spa, although there is a circular walk from Gilsland where you will pass the stepping stones on the way. If using the latter you will probably need a map. This is another area where Mrs Dan has lived otherwise I wouldn't have known it was here. The popping stone is where Sir Walter Scott allegedly proposed to Catherine Carpentier in 1797. The stone is supposedly much smaller now as local women have chipped bits off to hid under their pillows to find a husband (honest, I couldn't make this up). The Gilsland Spa itself is just by one of the bridges you may pass on the way to the cache. We didn't drink the water as the smell was a bit much - what were the Victorians thinking about coming here for the waters. GPS signals are a bit intermittent around here because of the trees but you shouldn't have any problems.

Cache contains calculator and pen, penknife, aftershave, jelly candle, butterfly brooch and cuckoo cache.
