"the atom bomb of fashion", Diana Vreeland



French mechanical engineer Louis Réard introduced a design he named the "bikini," taking the name from the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, where, four days earlier, the United States had initiated its first peace-time nuclear weapons test. The only model willing to showcase his revealing design was Micheline Bernardini (Michelle) a 19-year old nude dancer from the Casino de Paris.

Variations include:
1. a swimsuit combining a tank top and a bikini bottom
2. an extremely skimpy bikini
3. a bikini top and a small, skirted bottom
4. a two-piece swimsuit that comprises panties-style bottoms and a bra-style top
5. any bikini bottom worn with a bandeau as the top (no straps going over the shoulders)
6. a bathing suit designed to expose the wearer's pubic region
7. a bikini bottom with a stringed halter of two triangular pieces of cloth covering the breasts
8. a one piece suit, which leaves the entire sides of the torso and most of the buttocks uncovered
9. two triangular shaped pieces connected at the groin but not at the sides, where a
thin "string" wraps around the waist tied together to connect the two parts
