Sir Francis Drake was an explorer and military commander at the time when England was a major sea power. He was the most famous of the sea captains who roved the seas during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The queen encouraged her sailors to be "sea dogs" or pirates who plunder the wealth of other nations for the good of England. Sir Francis Drake became one of the most feared pirates of his time. Because of his tremendous hate for the Spanish, he pillaged, plundered, and captured their ships whenever he could. Spanish galleons were know to carry much wealth, and Drake had to exact his revenge on them for their destruction of several ships back in his early days of pirating. Drake's most famous and well know voyage began on December 13, 1577 and ended on September 26, 1580 when he became the first to circumnavigate the globe. He spent the remainder of his life raiding and tormenting the Spanish. Drake died during a raid on a Spanish port.
