The New Brunswick Great War Geocaching Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Midshipman John Victor Hatheway was among the first of New Brunswickers to die for King and Country during the Great War. At the age of 16, he entered the recently established Naval College in Halifax. Upon graduating in 1912, he was commissioned as a midshipman, and went to sea with the British Royal Navy. Hatheway was home (Fredericton) on leave celebrating his 19th birthday when war was declared on 3 August 1914. He was ordered immediately back to Halifax and was assigned to the British cruiser HMS Suffolk. He was later transferred to HMS Good Hope, the flagship of a British squadron assigned to the South Atlantic. On 1 November 1914, British and German squadrons met in the Battle of Coronel off the coast of Chile. HMS Good Hope was hit 35 times and sank with the loss of all 919 crew onboard. Hatheway was one of four midshipman from the Royal Canadian Navy who perished in the sinking of HMS Good Hope, making them the first Canadian casualties of the First World War. His naval mess kit uniform can be seen in the Fredericton Region Museum.

John était en congé à la maison à Fredericton pour célébrer son 19e anniversaire quand la guerre a été déclarée, le 4 août 1914. Il reçoit l’ordre de retourner à Halifax, où il est affecté au croiseur britannique HMS Suffolk. Il est ensuite muté au croiseur britannique HMS Good Hope, le navire amiral d’une escadre britannique basée dans l’Atlantique Sud. Le 1er novembre 1914, l’escadre britannique rencontre l’escadre allemande et la bataille de Coronel éclate le long de la côte du Chili. Le croiseur britannique HMS Good Hope est touché à 35 reprises et sombre avec les 919 membres de son équipage. John est l’un des quatre aspirants de marine de la Marine royale du Canada à périr à bord du Good Hope; ils comptent parmi les premières victimes canadiennes de la Première Guerre mondiale. L’uniforme de marine de John Victor Hatheway fait aujourd’hui partie de la collection du Musée de la région de Fredericton et est actuellement exposé au Musée d’histoire militaire du Nouveau-Brunswick.
