The GeoTrail

The New Brunswick Great War GeoTrail Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
Baseball was a favourite pastime among Canadian soldiers during the Great War. The 26th Battalion formed a team while they were still in Saint John. They continued to play baseball after they reached France during rest periods allowing the troops to momentarily escape the rigours of the frontlines. Both the other ranks and officers fielded teams. The 26th’s regimental team was highly successful. In June 1918 they won the 2nd Divisional championship and were awarded the Haldane Cup. Later, they competed in the Canadian Corps championship but were narrowly defeated by a team from the 1st Division. Among their star players was their short stop, Private Rankin Wheary, an African-Canadian from Woodstock, NB. He grew up playing ball in school and for the Woodstock Federals. Wheary joined the 104th Battalion in January 1916 and after reaching Britain he was transferred to the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles and then in March 1918 the 26th where he joined the regimental team and competed in the Corps championship. He was killed in action near Cambrai on October 7, 1918, only a month before the armistice.

Durant la Grande Guerre, le baseball était l’un des passe-temps favoris des soldats canadiens. Le 26e Bataillon avait formé une équipe lorsqu’il était encore à Saint John. Ses membres ont continué à jouer au baseball une fois arrivés en France pendant les périodes de repos, ce qui permettait aux troupes d’échapper momentanément aux rigueurs du front. L’équipe était constituée d’officiers et de militaires du rang. L’équipe régimentaire du 26e Bataillon a connu beaucoup de succès. Elle remporte d’ailleurs le championnat de la 2e division canadienne en juin 1918 et gagne la coupe Haldane. Elle participe ensuite au championnat du Corps canadien, mais elle est battue de justesse par une équipe de la 1re Division. Parmi les joueurs étoiles de l’équipe, on comptait l’arrêt-court, le soldat Rankin Wheary, un Afro-Canadien de Woodstock, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Il jouait déjà au baseball à l’école et il a fait partie des Woodstock Federals. Rankin Wheary se joint au 104e Bataillon en janvier 1916. Une fois en Grande-Bretagne, il est muté au 5e Bataillon canadien de fusiliers à cheval, puis au 26e Bataillon en mars 1918. Il se joint alors à l’équipe régimentaire et participe au championnat du Corps. Il a été tué au combat près de Cambrai le 7 octobre 1918, un mois seulement avant l’armistice.
