The GeoTrail
The New Brunswick Great War Geocaching Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
The weapon of the artillery is the high explosive shell lobbed over many kilometres. To the poor infantryman, the first warning of an artillery attack might be the “swoosh” of air or the whistling sound as the shell hurtled through the air just prior to exploding on impact. If you weren't killed by the explosion or the flying shrapnel, you were certainly stunned by the explosion and lost your hearing! The Whiz-Bang was a German artillery shell, so called because it was fired at high velocity and quick succession. The first indication of its approach was a “Whiz” sound followed very quickly by an explosion. This sequence of sounds earned it the moniker Whiz-Bang from our boys at the front. There was not much time to react or get under cover. During the Great War, artillery evolved from the direct fire role to indirect fire and was the principle reason why “No Man’s Land” was like no other place on Earth. Tons of explosives were fired by both sides creating an area of destruction and mayhem everywhere and destroying every living thing. Even fortified trenches were no guarantee of escape from devastation.

L’arme de l’artillerie est le projectile, un obus brisant projeté sur plusieurs kilomètres. Pour les pauvres soldats d’infanterie, le premier signe d’un bombardement d’artillerie était le sifflement qu’émettait l’obus dans l’air juste avant d’exploser à l’impact. Si les soldats n’étaient pas tués par l’explosion ou les éclats d’obus, ils étaient certainement abasourdis par la détonation et ils perdaient l’ouïe. Les obus allemands de bas calibre étaient des bombes d’artillerie projetées à grande vitesse et en succession rapide. Le premier signe de l’approche d’un obus allemand était un sifflement (Whiz) rapidement suivi d’une explosion (Bang). La séquence de ces sons lui a valu le sobriquet de Whiz-Bang de la part des soldats au front. Ces obus ne laissaient pas aux soldats beaucoup de temps pour réagir ou se mettre à l’abri. Pendant la Grande Guerre, l’artillerie est passée du tir direct au tir indirect. Le « terrain neutre » est alors devenu l’endroit le plus redouté : des tonnes d’explosifs étaient lancées des deux côtés créant une véritable zone de destruction où aucun être vivant ne pouvait survivre. Même les tranchées fortifiées n’offraient aucune garantie d’échapper à la dévastation.
