The element Vanadium (23 on the Periodic Table of Elements) forms compounds that are lilac, green, blue and yellow. It turns red when heated.
Vanadium is named after Vanadis, the Norse goddess of love, beauty, fertility, youth, gold, war and death. Another name she is known by is Freyja, which is Old Norse for the "Lady." In mythology, she rides a chariot driven by two cats, owns the boar Hildisvini and possesses a cloak of falcon feathers. She is married to the god Oor, who goes on long travels. While Oor is absent, Freyja stays behind and, in her sorrow, weeps tears of red gold.
