Geocache Description:

Welcome to the

Joe Pool Lake Paddling Series!

This cache series is designed so that the caches would be obtained, primarily, by paddling (kayak, canoe, raft, etc.). Of course, there may be other ways to get to the cache, but I leave that to you. This series was initially created by AggieMD, but I hope that other cachers will contribute to this paddle series or start their own in other nearby areas as there is a shortage of paddling caches in the DFW area.

Joe Pool Lake is fed by the waters of Walnut and Mountain Creeks and is one of the few lakes in Texas that flows north. This series starts at the very southern end of the lake where Mountain Creek begins to feed into the lake. Much of this initial portion is secluded with lots of wildlife, including varieties of birds, snakes, mammals, and of course fish. The lake portion is much more open, but may be sharing the area with other boaters so beware of your surroundings.

Before you attempt this series, please consider the following:

  • You will get wet, and possibly soaked, doing this series.
  • Wear a PFD/Lifejacket. It just may save your life.
  • You must have a safety whistle available for use. This is Texas state law.
  • Bring sunscreen.
  • Bring your cell phone ... just in case for emergencies.
  • Bring your camera for pictures.
  • Bring lots of bottled water!

Contact me through my geocaching.com profile if you need ideas on how to get started with paddling. There are several locations in the area that you can rent kayaks, canoes, jet skis, and boats at an hourly rate if you don't already own one.

There are a total of 7 boat ramps scattered around the lake: two at Cedar Hill State Park, two in Lynn Creek Park, one at Lynn Creek Marina, one in Britton Park, and one in Loyd Park. Your entry fees to get into each of the parks allows you to access their boat launches. For using the Lynn Creek Marina boat launch, you need to pay at the Marina store.
