History of Camp Hill
Camp Hill overlooks Beaufort and was the site of the original Police Camp in the town's earliest days.
Camp Hill Road heads north from Beaufort towards Raglan, along a ridge that separates the Main Lead valley to the west and the Waterloo valley to the east.
There was a big gold rush to both these valleys in 1854. Many of the gullies that fall away to the east and the west of Camp Hill were heavily and successfully mined. The big rush only lasted a few months, but at the height of it there were tens of thousands of miners in this area, and the roads in the two valleys were lined with hotels, services and businesses. The Police would ride their horses along Camp Hill Road and down into the mining camps in their efforts to maintain law and order.
