While traveling the local back roads conducting maintenance checks on my geocache hides, passed a sign indicacting a cemetery that I had not ever seen before. Decided to place a cache here.
The cemetery is located between the towns of Parkerville/Council Grove, KS, along Parkerville Road. At the site, you will see a green gate with a lock/chain. A sign behind the gate will indicate that this is DOWNING CEMETERY, and established date, AND a warning about traveling this road when wet. Chain can be removed and the gate can be opened. Please ensure that you CLOSE the gate once finished exploring the cemetery. Cache is placed somewhere in the vicinity of the green gate and LOW. Hiked the roughly .75 mile one-way trail to cemetery and it was worth the hike!! Just follow the trail from the gate until you come to an open field. At the open field, follow the trail to the RIGHT, thus skirting the field and tree line. Eventually you will re-enter the trees; cross a mostly dry creek; and eventually see a sign that says CEMETERY with a silver arrowhead pointing the way. Go up a rocky road and the trail will come out into an even more open field with great views. Follow trail to the cemetery. At cemetery, there will be 2 historical markers and graves of about 30 or so people; the grave of a veteran from The War of 1812 & another of a Civil War veteran. Great views of surrounding countryside from cemetery. Cache is NOT at the cemetery.
As for the cache - replaced a missing container. You will searching for a PILL BOTTLE with a secondary container inside to help protect the log from the elements.
Able to park safely off the side of the road. D/T ratings just a tad higher than probably needs to be for safety reasons. This is a well traveled gravel road and vehicles do go by quite quicker than they should, thus kicking up an enormous amount of dust. Be careful and mindful of pets/children at this spot.
